Unit Price vs. Sale Price: Spotting Real Grocery Deals

Two tags, same shelf. One shouts SALE $4.99. The one next to it says $5.49 in plain print. Easy call? Not until you check one small number most shoppers skip: the unit price.

What the unit price actually tells you

The unit price is the cost per standard amount — per ounce, per pound, per 100 grams, per count — usually printed in small type on the shelf tag. It’s the only number that lets you compare two products fairly, because it strips away package-size games.

That $4.99 sale item might be a 12-ounce package (about 42¢ per ounce). The $5.49 “regular” item might be 20 ounces (about 27¢ per ounce). The plain tag wins by a wide margin — the sale tag just had better typography.

Three places sale tags mislead honest shoppers

Smaller packages at familiar prices. When packages shrink and prices hold steady, the price looks unchanged while the unit price quietly climbs. Comparing unit prices across brands — or across weeks — is how you catch it.

Multi-buy framing. “2 for $6” reads like a discount even when one unit costs $3 every day. Sometimes you must buy two to get the price; often you don’t. The fine print on the tag says which, and the unit price tells you whether $3 was ever a deal.

Cross-size sales. The small jar goes on sale; the big jar doesn’t. The sale tag draws your hand to the small jar even when the big jar’s everyday unit price is still lower. The deal is real — it’s just not the best price on the shelf.

Weighted items: the unit price IS the price

For produce and meat, the tag’s headline number is already a unit price — $1.49/lb, $6.99/kg. The actual cost depends on the package weight, which makes mental budgeting slippery: three pounds of apples at $1.49/lb is a different line item than the “$1.49” your brain filed away.
